When do I use an everyday seal?

  • Paperwork at work or school
  • Receiving parcels and registered mail
  • Everyday forms that ask for “inkan” but not a registered seal

Do not use your registered seal (jitsuin) for everyday things. Keep it safe at home, and use an everyday seal instead.

Which size should I choose?

Size Good for Max lines
10.5 mm Short surnames (up to 3 katakana or 5 letters) 1 line
12.0 mm Most surnames (up to 4 katakana or 6 letters) — our recommendation 1 line

When you type your name, the form tells you which sizes fit.

What can be carved

Your name, as on your residence card

Seal sample: KIM
Alphabet — exactly as on your residence card, in capital letters. Carved in our seal-style lettering.
Sample impression: スミス in katakana
Katakana — for example スミス for SMITH. Choose from 6 lettering styles.
Sample impression: 山田 in kanji
Kanji — if your residence card shows your name in kanji. We carve the Japanese form of the character.

An everyday seal has one line, so most people put only their surname on it.
